Kosovo trademark guide for diaspora business owners abroad
Many brands in Prishtina, Prizren and Peja are started by people who live and work abroad. The idea, the investment and often the name come from the diaspora, while a relative or partner runs the shop locally. That arrangement works well until there is a disagreement about who owns the name. This guide explains how to secure a Kosovo trademark when you are not in Kosovo.

Decide who owns the brand
The trademark belongs to whoever is named as the applicant. If a relative or local partner files in their own name, they own the mark, even if you paid for everything. Decide early whether the owner should be you personally, your foreign company or a Kosovo company you control.
You can file without travelling
Applications can be prepared remotely. You send the name or logo, the owner's details and a signed power of attorney, and the local representative files with KIPA. Updates and the certificate can be handled by email.
Search before you print signs and packaging
A preliminary search checks whether an identical or similar mark is already registered or pending in Kosovo. Doing this before ordering signage, packaging or a website avoids an expensive rebrand.
Cover the right goods and services
A café, a clothing label and an online shop need different classes. Describe what you will actually sell, and we match it to the Nice Classification without adding classes you do not need.
Think about Albania too
If you plan to sell in Albania as well, note that Albania has a separate register. Filing in both countries is a separate procedure in each territory.
Questions from foreign brand owners
Can I register a Kosovo trademark while living abroad?
Yes. The process can be handled remotely through a local representative.
Should my relative in Kosovo be the owner?
Only if that is your intention. The named applicant owns the mark.
Does my German or Swiss trademark cover Kosovo?
No. Kosovo needs its own national filing.
Do you guarantee registration?
No. KIPA decides; a preliminary search reduces the risk.
