Protect your brand in Kosovo and Albania
The Western Balkans is a patchwork of separate trademark territories. This guide shows which filing route actually reaches each market, what it costs, and how to sequence the filings so nothing is left unprotected.
Filing routes that matter
Kosovo — national filing
Kosovo is not covered by the EU trademark or, in practice, by most Madrid designations. A direct national application before the Industrial Property Agency is the only reliable route. Foreign applicants must appoint a licensed local agent.
Albania — national or Madrid designation
Albania is a party to the Madrid Protocol, so it can be reached either through a national filing or by designating Albania in an international registration based on your home mark.
European Union — EUIPO
One application covers all EU member states. It does not extend to Kosovo, so companies selling in both markets need the EUTM plus a separate Kosovo filing.
Madrid System — WIPO
Efficient when you need five or more countries. It centralises renewals and changes of ownership, but remains dependent on the basic home registration for the first five years.
Priority window
A filing in one Paris Convention country gives you six months to file elsewhere while keeping the original date. Used well, this lets you secure a region cheaply and sequentially.
Enforcement and customs
A registered mark is the basis for cease and desist letters, oppositions, platform takedowns and customs seizures of counterfeit goods entering the market.

Does an EU trademark protect my brand in Kosovo?
No. Kosovo is outside EUIPO territory. A separate national trademark application in Kosovo is required, filed through a licensed local agent.
Can a foreign company own a trademark in Kosovo?
Yes. Foreign individuals and companies can own Kosovo trademarks without a local entity; they only need a licensed representative for the procedure.
How long does registration take?
Kosovo typically issues a certificate within 8 to 14 months, and Albania in a comparable timeframe. Legal priority, however, starts on the filing date, not on the certificate date.
What does it cost?
In Kosovo the official fee is 250€ for one Nice class plus 40€ per additional class. Albania and EUIPO have their own fee schedules; we quote each territory before filing.
Should I file in both countries at once?
If you sell or distribute in both markets, yes. Regional filings are usually made together to keep dates aligned and to prevent local squatters from registering your brand ahead of you.
