Kosovo trademark registration for German, Austrian and Swiss companies
Germany, Austria and Switzerland are among Kosovo's closest business partners, with a large diaspora, many family-run exporters and growing service companies. Yet a German (DPMA), Austrian (ÖPA), Swiss (IGE) or EU trademark does not by itself protect a brand in Kosovo. Kosovo keeps its own national register at the Industrial Property Agency (KIPA). This guide explains what DACH companies need to plan before launching in Kosovo.

Why your home registration does not reach Kosovo
Trademark rights are territorial. An EU trade mark covers EU member states, and national DPMA, ÖPA or IGE rights cover their own countries. Kosovo is not part of the EU, so a separate Kosovo filing is generally required.
Check the current position on international filing routes with your representative before relying on them for Kosovo.
Typical DACH scenarios
Diaspora entrepreneurs opening a branch or franchise in Prishtina; manufacturers shipping through a Kosovo distributor; online shops delivering to Kosovo customers; service companies hiring developers or call-centre teams there. In each case, the brand becomes visible in Kosovo before anyone checks the local register.
Diaspora businesses should note that relatives or partners in Kosovo are not automatically the right trademark owner. Decide which entity owns the brand.
Use your existing filing as a starting point
Your DPMA, ÖPA, IGE or EUIPO filing gives a ready-made mark and specification. Send it to us; we adapt the goods and services to what you will actually offer in Kosovo, and check whether a priority claim is still available.
Priority under the Paris Convention is time-limited, so contact us early if you filed recently.
Search the Kosovo register first
Similar local marks may exist even if your brand is well known in Germany or Switzerland. A preliminary Kosovo search before printing packaging or signing a distribution deal reduces surprises.
Practical next steps
Send: the mark, the owner entity, your home registration number, the products or services for Kosovo and your launch date. We reply with search results, a filing plan and an itemised quote, in English.
Questions from foreign brand owners
Does my German or EU trademark cover Kosovo?
No. Kosovo has its own national register, so a separate filing is generally needed.
Can a Swiss company own a Kosovo trademark?
Yes. Foreign companies can apply, usually through a local representative.
Can I use my DPMA filing for priority?
Possibly, if you are still within the priority period. Ask us to check the dates.
