Protect your brand in Kosovo from Europe
Planning to sell, distribute or franchise in Kosovo? Trademark coverage does not automatically follow your products across borders. Here is what an EU, UK or other European business should check before entering the Kosovo market.

Why European registration alone is not enough
A trademark is territorial. An EU trade mark protects the EU member states, but Kosovo is not one of them. The same is true of a UK national mark: it does not automatically create trademark rights in Kosovo. Even if your logo is well known, relying solely on an existing foreign registration leaves practical gaps when dealing with local distributors, online listings or copycat products.
If you already have an EUTM, read our detailed answer to whether an EU trademark covers Kosovo. Kosovo has its own national filing procedure and register; protection should be assessed separately for the products and services you actually offer here.
Before filing: search, scope and ownership
Start with a Kosovo trademark search for identical and similar marks. Then list the goods and services you intend to sell under the relevant Nice classes. Match the owner details to the entity that should hold the rights—not simply the local reseller—so contracts and future enforcement reflect the right owner.
For example, a food producer entering through a distributor may need coverage for its packaged goods, while a software company may need to consider software and related services. A search cannot guarantee registration: the competent authority examines each application and third parties may object.
How a European business files in Kosovo
- Prepare the mark. Supply the exact word mark or a clear logo file and your company’s legal name and address.
- Choose the classes. Identify the specific products and services for which you want protection. Our Nice classes guide explains the distinction.
- Appoint a local representative. A business based outside Kosovo should coordinate the application through a qualified local agent and provide the necessary authorisation.
- File and follow the process. The application is examined and published; the outcome depends on the examination and any objections. See the registration timeline rather than assuming a fixed certificate date.
- Plan enforcement. Once registered, maintain records and consider action against infringing goods, including customs measures in Kosovo where appropriate.
You do not need to travel merely to start the conversation. Read the fuller foreign-company filing guide for the documents and representation requirements.
Common questions from European brand owners
Does an EU trademark cover Kosovo?
No. An EU trade mark registered with EUIPO applies to EU member states, not Kosovo. If Kosovo is a target market, consider a separate national application.
Can a European company register a trademark in Kosovo without opening a local company?
Yes. A foreign company can apply in its own name. Applicants based abroad should arrange local representation for the filing procedure.
Can we register our brand in Kosovo remotely?
The application can generally be coordinated remotely through a local representative. You will need the applicant details, the mark, a list of goods and services, and an authorisation for your representative.
Is an EUIPO search enough before filing in Kosovo?
No. Search the Kosovo trademark register too, including similar names or logos in relevant classes. An EUIPO result alone cannot establish that the mark is available in Kosovo.
Can a Madrid international registration designate Kosovo?
Kosovo is not currently a designation available through the Madrid System. A national filing in Kosovo is the relevant route to assess.
