Register a trademark in Kosovo from the UK
British companies selling to Kosovo, appointing a local distributor or opening a franchise often assume that a UK registration travels with them. It does not. Trademark rights are territorial, and Kosovo keeps its own national register at the Industrial Property Agency (KIPA) in Prishtina. This guide explains how a UK business can plan a Kosovo filing without guesswork.

Does a UK or EU trademark cover Kosovo?
No. A UKIPO registration protects the mark in the United Kingdom, and an EU trade mark covers EU member states. Kosovo is outside both systems, so protection there normally requires a national application filed with KIPA.
Since Brexit, many UK businesses already hold separate UK and EU rights. Kosovo should be treated the same way: as its own territory with its own register, examination and renewal dates.
When a UK business should file in Kosovo
Typical triggers are a distribution agreement with a Kosovo importer, online sales shipped to Kosovo customers, a franchise or licence with a local partner, and marketing aimed at the Albanian-speaking market across Kosovo and Albania.
Filing before the local launch reduces the risk that a distributor, competitor or former partner registers a similar name first.
Steps for a UK applicant
1. Free preliminary search of the Kosovo register for identical and similar marks. 2. Define goods and services using the Nice Classification. 3. Sign a power of attorney for local representation. 4. File with KIPA and pay official fees. 5. Examination, publication and the opposition period. 6. Registration and certificate.
The overall timeline depends on examination and any opposition; we give you a realistic estimate before filing.
Documents to prepare
Usually: the mark (word or logo file), the owner's full legal name and address, the list of goods and services, a signed power of attorney and, where a priority claim is made, details of the earlier UK filing. We confirm current formal requirements before you sign anything.
Who should own the Kosovo mark?
Register the mark in the name of the UK company that owns the brand, not the local distributor. Ownership, licences and permission to use the mark should be set out in writing before the distributor starts trading.
Questions from foreign brand owners
Can a UK company file a trademark in Kosovo?
Yes. Foreign applicants normally file through a local representative.
Is my UK registration enough for Kosovo?
No. A UK registration does not extend to Kosovo; a separate national filing is normally needed.
Can I communicate in English?
Yes. We handle UK clients in English from the first search to the certificate.
Do you guarantee registration?
No. KIPA decides; a preliminary search reduces the risk of refusal or opposition.
