Western Balkans trademark strategy: where Kosovo fits
European brands expanding into the Western Balkans often plan one regional launch, but trademark protection is still country by country. Some markets can be reached through international routes, while Kosovo usually requires a national filing. This guide helps EU companies build a sensible order of filings with Kosovo and Albania in view.
Protection is national, not regional
There is no single Western Balkans trademark. Each market has its own office and register, and an EU trade mark does not extend to non-EU countries in the region.
Why Kosovo needs separate attention
Kosovo's national filing route means it is often missed in regional Madrid-based plans. Brands then discover a local conflict only when a distributor or franchisee is already active.
Sequencing filings
Start where you will sell first or where copying risk is highest. Many EU brands entering through Prishtina or Tirana file Kosovo and Albania together, then extend once distribution is confirmed.
