Trademark registration in Kosovo for foreign companies
Kosovo runs its own national trademark register. Neither an EU trademark nor a registration in a neighbouring country extends there, so companies selling, franchising or manufacturing in Kosovo file locally. This guide explains exactly what a foreign applicant needs, in the order it is needed.
The filing process, step by step
1. Appoint a licensed local agent
Applicants without a seat or domicile in Kosovo must be represented before the Industrial Property Agency (IPA) by a registered industrial property agent. This is a formal requirement — filings without representation are not accepted.
2. Sign a power of attorney
A simple signed power of attorney naming the agent is enough in most cases; notarisation or legalisation is generally not required. A scanned copy is normally accepted at filing.
3. Run a clearance search
Before filing, the mark is checked against the national register and against earlier international registrations designating Kosovo, to reduce the risk of refusal or opposition.
4. Define the goods and services
Goods and services are listed under the Nice Classification. Foreign applicants often mirror their home or EUTM specification, but wording is adapted where local practice requires more precision.
5. Claim priority where available
If you filed the same mark abroad within the previous six months, a Paris Convention priority claim can be made so your Kosovo filing keeps the earlier date.
6. Examination, publication and registration
The IPA examines formalities and absolute grounds, publishes the application in the official bulletin, and — if no opposition succeeds — issues the certificate. Protection runs ten years from the filing date and is renewable.
